What happens when someone scans my email QR code?
Their phone opens the default mail app — Gmail, Apple Mail, Outlook, or whatever is set as default — with your address pre-filled in the To field. If you added a subject line, that appears pre-filled too. The person just needs to type their message and tap Send.
Is an email QR code different from a contact card QR?
Yes. An email QR code only opens a compose window addressed to you — it does not save any contact information to the phone. If you want someone to save your full details (name, phone, address, company), use our vCard QR Code Generator instead. For just an email entry point, this is the cleaner option.
Does it work if the person does not have an email app installed?
On most phones, the mailto: URI is handled by the default email app. If no email app is configured, the phone typically shows a prompt to choose one or opens webmail in the browser. iOS users without a mail app set up may see no response — in that case a vCard or WhatsApp QR is a more reliable contact method.
Can I add a pre-filled subject line?
Yes. Enter a subject in the optional field and it encodes as a mailto: subject parameter. When scanned, the compose window opens with your address and that subject already filled in. Useful for feedback forms ("Feedback — [Product Name]"), event RSVPs, or job applications where you want consistent subject lines.
Can I pre-fill the message body as well?
The tool currently encodes the email address and subject. For a pre-filled body, use our main QR Code Generator, select the URL type, and manually construct a mailto link: mailto:you@example.com?subject=Hello&body=Hi%20there. Paste that full mailto URL into the URL field.
Where should I put an email QR code?
Business cards are the classic use — instead of cramming a long email address in a small font, add a QR code and let people tap-to-email. Other placements: product feedback inserts, event name badges, conference booth signage, restaurant feedback cards, and PDF brochures where a clickable link is not possible.
What email clients support the mailto: link?
Gmail, Apple Mail, Outlook, Yahoo Mail, Spark, and virtually every major email client on both iOS and Android correctly handles mailto: links. The link opens the compose view in whichever app the user has set as their default mail app.
Can I add multiple recipients or a CC address?
This tool is designed for a single To address. For multiple recipients, use the main QR Code Generator and manually construct the URL: mailto:a@example.com,b@example.com?cc=c@example.com. Paste that as a URL type QR. Keep in mind that long mailto strings increase QR density and may scan less reliably when printed small.
Will the QR code stop working if I change my email address?
Yes. The email address is baked into the QR code at generation time. If you switch addresses, regenerate the QR and reprint all materials. This is a fundamental limitation of static QR codes — they cannot be redirected after printing.
What size should I print the QR code at?
For business cards, 1.5×1.5cm is the minimum workable size for a clean email-only QR. For flyers and signage, 3×3cm or larger is comfortable to scan at arm's length. Always download as PNG at the largest resolution for print jobs — upscaling a small PNG introduces blurring.
